This week, we recognized Penny Benser, Construction Disbursing Coordinator for CU Commercial Title, for exemplifying a key part of our culture. Part of Penny's job is to help general contractors disburse funds for construction projects.
We recognized her for going above and beyond in her role. “She provided the general contractor with training. She went helped obtain proof of payment from subcontractors. She also worked with the owner, leasing company, and general contractor to keep the project moving forward and kept lines of communication open between all the parties,” the nomination said.
In June, CU Companies began taking nominations for employees who exemplified our “Be the Solution” culture. We’ve identified eight qualities we’re looking to encourage in each other: Service, passion, quality, trust, innovation, responsible, teamwork, and knowledge. Why? Because we know there are hundreds of companies that provide the same products and services as we do. We know focusing on true partnership and on a great culture will make us stand out for those we serve.

Each quarter, CU Companies staff gathers to hear a presentation from one of our leaders on the eight qualities we believe define a great culture. In June, CU Title President Steve Albers presented on Quality.
Steve focused on our desire to be "people of quality." The phrase expresses that we want to have characteristics – inspired by our mission and purpose – that positively affect those around us.
He gave the example of CU Companies' receptionists, Judy Lawrence and Shannon Vermillion. "They have a quality that makes a tough job look easy: They are happy and willing to say good morning to anyone who comes in," he said. "That’s really important."
Giving others a warm reception is one way that we can make a difference for others. "Think about the qualities that you need to bring to your job so that you makes a positive difference for others," Steve said.
